چکیده

This paper analyses the issues involved in providing virtual distributed shared memory for time-shared parallel machines. We study the performance of two di erent page management policies, namely, static and dynamic page allocation under two widely accepted scheduling policies: Gang scheduling and independent processor scheduling. The performance of each page management policy is studied under di erent replacement scopes (local versus global replacement). Results obtained after extensive simulations show that dynamic page allocation performs better throughout all the environments simulated. We also observe a better performance of independent processor over gang scheduling as well as a similar performance between local and global replacement scope.

Parallel Processing for View-Dependent Polygonal Virtual Environments

This paper presents a parallel algorithm for preprocessing as well as real-time navigation of view-dependent virtual environments on shared memory multiprocessors. The algorithm proceeds by hierarchical spatial subdivision of the input dataset by an octree. The parallel algorithm is robust and does not generate any artifacts such as degenerate triangles and mesh foldovers. The algorithm perform...

Optimistic Computations in Virtual Environments

Virtual environments often require computationally intensive image computations that cripple eeorts to provide real-time animation. The problem is that physically accurate images require at least seconds and sometimes hours to compute. It is clear such latencies are unacceptable in virtual environments where images must be generated in real time. We present an optimistic I/O mechanism implement...

Semiotics of Collective Memory of the Iran-Iraq War (Holy Defence): A Case Study of the Shared Images in Virtual Social Networks

This study aims to achieve a semiotic understanding of collective memory of the Iran-Iraq war. For this purpose, samples of images in virtual social networks shared in response to the news of discovery and return of the bodies of more than 175 divers have been analyzed. Visual signs in photographs, cartoons, graphic designs, prints, paintings and posters, in methods of historical pictures and f...

Parallelization Techniques for Spatial-Temporal Occupancy Maps from Multiple Video Streams

We describe and analyze several techniques to parallelize a novel algorithm that fuses intensity data from multiple video cameras to create a spatial-temporal occupancy map. Instead of tracking objects, the algorithm operates by recognizing freespace. The brevity of operations in the algorithm allows a dense spatial occupancy map to be temporally computed at real-time video rates. Since each in...

JavaNow: A Framework for Parallel Computing on Networks of Workstations

Networks of workstations are becoming a dominant force in the distributed computing arena, this due primarily to the excellent price to performance ratio of such systems when compared to traditional massively parallel architectures. It is therefore critical to develop programming languages and environments that can help harness the raw computational power available on these systems. The JavaNow...
